Disciplining a Boy

I just had to write about this. Jack turned 6 years old in December and he is all boy. He loves to wrestle, play sports, eat a ton, you know...the typical stuff. He's also into a habit of correcting everyone constantly ("actually...") and lying to get out of trouble. He knows he has a tender-hearted sister and can manipulate the fire out of that poor girl. Well, he was developing quite the selfish attitude and bending the truth constantly to get his way.

It was time for a drastic form of discipline. One that he would remember for a long time. We had to do this with Emma too when she was about 4 because she had a smart mouth on her. So we decided to do the same thing for him that we did for her. Surely it would work...right?

Well, we told him he was missing school one day (he loves school) and was going to sit on his bed and do nothing all day long. He needed to think about his actions lately. So Will told him he was going to sit on his bed with nothing to do but think for 8 hours. Seemed a little long to me, but it can be difficult to get a message through to Jack, so okay. Will did give him a sheet of paper and some crayons.

And Jack sat there.

And sat there.

And peeled crayons.

And didn't complain.

And didn't cry.

And didn't say anything at all.

Will brought him lunch at noon.

And he sat there.

And sat some more.

Finally, at 5:00, Will told him he could get up. Jack simply said "yes sir" and got up. And continued along his way. We were a bit puzzled. Did the message get through to him? Did he just take his discipline like a man? Or did he just beat us at our own game? When we did this for Emma she broke after about 2 hours and still remembers it as a completely horrible day. We could refer back to that day of discipline for her regularly and she would shape up real fast because she did not want to go through that again.

It's been about 2 months now. I'm not sure Jack even remembers it.

His attitude has been better though...hmmm.

Oh the joys of disciplining a boy.
