New Street Signs

When we moved down here two years ago, this was our address:

San Francisco de Dos Rios
25 metros este de la Bomba Shell
300 metros sur
Casa azul y blanca a la mano derecha

As a side note, a "bomba" is a gas station, not a bomb shelter. And it's important to note that when talking about directions, 25 meters is not an exact measurement. It means only one street. And 100 meters means about a block. Well, right after we moved here, all the Shell stations were bought out by Delta. So our address changed to this:

San Francisco de Dos Rios
25 metros este de la Bomba Delta (antigua bomba Shell)
300 metros sur
Casa azul y blanca a la mano derecha

And yes, we had to say "the old Shell station" because a lot of people hadn't noticed that the gas stations had been bought out. Well, then Dos Rios decided to put in another Delta station only a few blocks away from the one by our house. So now we have to say this:

San Francisco de Dos Rios
25 metros este de la segunda Bomba Delta
300 metros sur
Casa azul y blanca a la mano derecha

A few months ago, Costa Rica decided to start naming the streets. As our address obviously shows, up to this point there have been no house numbers or street names. So they have now put up street signs. The funniest part to me is that I don't think ticos have even noticed them. We've tried telling people what street we live on, and they just stare at us blankly. Someone said they mentioned the street signs while teaching an ESL class and no one even knew what he was talking about. Anyway, even though no one seems to care, this is a historic event.

Here is the sign at the corner of the main street by our house

This picture shows the back of the sign. It's blank. So if you're driving up the other way you're out of luck. And that's Manuel who cuts his grass every day. And the brand new street sign already has some nice stickers and graffiti on it.

This is our street! Calle 37! And I love how they stuck this street sign on our neighbor's house. I have noticed that there are several other "Calle 37" in our neighborhood, but whatever. No importa.
